China's major steel producing province, Hebei, issued an orange pollution alert on Tuesday, involving 10 industrial towns including Shijiazhuang, Baoding, Tangshan and Handan, the official Hebei News Agency said.
The alert is the second largest on the four-level emergency system scale.
The ten cities will adopt emergency measures against pollution for four days from December 12, published Hebei News.
The Tangshan steel polo government said in a statement that it has ordered steelmakers to restrict production as part of emergency measures against pollution.
Tangshan also ordered coal producers to extend the coke preparation period, or the time it takes to cool the coal during the production of the input, for at least 48 hours.
Tangshan province has also halted the production of a number of construction inputs such as cement and ceramics during the period, as well as all coal-fired boilers.
